For me, dancing is liberating, it's an amazing way to connect with others and to express myself. Through dance I am constantly learning and exploring.
GABBY SANDERS DANCER AND CHOREOGRAPHER
I love contemporary dance mainly because it has this power to activate forces and energy that you feel but cannot see. For me, it is an extremely direct form of communication; it does not rely on words to be understood. Dance has a fluid, improvisational element which seems to express the unseen forces of life, like creativity, fate and serendipity – qualities you cannot see, but you know when they are present.
Early in the creative process, I knew I wanted to incorporate dance within the Meant to Be video, not only because I love to collaborate and dance, but also because of my past.
Creating stage sets with choreographers was one of my last, purely artistic collaborations before I decided to place my feet firmly into the world of jewellery. For the engagement ring collection, I wanted to be able to work with dance once again.
I saw the work of Gabby Sanders and was instantly mesmerised. I was excited about the prospect of collaborating with her as it would allow me to explore movement and the relationship between body, line and shape. But what I wasn’t counting on was that watching her dance made me realise that creativity is something bigger than us all. It cannot be planned but exists in the process of doing. Yes, I could set up the parameters of her dance – the paper, the charcoal and the overall shape I wanted her drawing to take – but she had to tap into the creative energy within her, she had to create her dance. The dancing within the video is pure improvisation at work, which I think gives it a captivating quality; we see Gabby caught in the act of creating.

MUCH OF MY ATTRACTION TO JEWELLERY IS BASED IN ITS CONNECTION WITH THE UNSAID. DANCE IS THE SAME, IT DOES NOT NEED WORDS TO BE UNDERSTOOD
